Jane Bloodgood-Abrams (b.1963) Though trained as a semi-abstract painter, the artist found the landscape emerging more and more in her work after art school. She became fascinated with 19th century landscape paintings and the emotional qualities they evoked. In addition, an awakening to the spiritual connection she found in nature had her spending more time outdoors, witnessing dramatic atmospheric moments and experiencing the power of space. Her work then evolved into paintings that sought to recreate the emotional quality of those experiences.

Whether it be a simple view of the emerging dawn through trees or a grand canvas depicting an expansive view at sunset, the landscapes of Jane Bloodgood-Abrams transport the viewer beyond everyday life. The more evocative or soul-stirring experiences in nature and the qualities of light, mood and atmosphere, are explored in her work.

Stylistically, Bloodgood-Abrams is greatly influenced by the 19th century landscape painters such as Frederic Church, Thomas Moran and George Inness, yet she adds a decidedly modern edge through her use of color and often iconographic compositions. The paintings could best be described as an “expressionistic luminism” featuring dramatic compositions and color, yet subtle tonal transitions with a warm “inner glow” that creates a sense of mood and mystery

Though occasionally sketches are made on site, Bloodgood-Abrams says “I feel most consciously present in nature, and prefer to absorb the experience while it happens.” After some time and “distillation” she will then approach the canvas in the studio, building up layered glazes of paint while recalling the emotional memory of the scene.

Bloodgood-Abrams explores themes of transcendentalism, expansive space, and connection to nature, with sky being a prominent feature in her work. The artist says “I enjoy working with sky and clouds as subject matter since it is so universal. It is a great adventure for me as an artist to travel to and be inspired by different landscapes, but wherever we are on this planet, we share the sky and witness its many changes.”

The paintings also serve as a visual expression of the states of being or awareness experienced at different points in life. Bloodgood-Abrams states “Though influenced by what I see in nature, the work is very intuitive, with the painting often leading me through the process. The emotion evoked often serves as a metaphor for my own personal experiences. Ultimately it is my hope that those viewing my work will be stirred to remember their own moments of deep connection to spirit and nature.”
