ARTIST STATEMENT:
I have found in bronze an intrinsic force that allows me to build dynamic figures, full of movement that defy gravity as they rotate in space and balance themselves on a single point. However, there exists a contradiction. Bronze produces a sense of cold and hardness, which is not consistent with my work. Thus, I try to ensure that the material’s properties do not govern my sculptures.
As I contract or expand the figures, the volumes, the muscles, I expect the pieces to triumph over that struggle and speak for themselves. And, as I coordinate each body, part-by-part, I try to have each one acquire a voice of its own that communicates something different to each viewer. I believe a work of art resembles a mirror in which each observer finds a different image; after all, each observer projects himself in terms of his own desires, uncertainties, or frustrations.
Bronze allows me to model at a deeply detailed level, which I enjoy. Sometimes, it is precisely those very small, almost imperceptible parts that allow the sculpture to speak. The wings, worked feather by feather, motivate the observer to join them in flight and even fear the fall. It is those meticulously worked muscles, veins, and ligaments that allow one to perceive a genuine attempt to achieve physical stability, emulating the human ideal in its angst over balancing emotion, thought and physicality.
In covering the face of my figures, I attempt to depersonalize them, leaving as the only form of expression the body, itself a universal symbol and common element of all mankind. It is something as familiar as one’s own image and as foreign as the anonymity bestowed by a mask.
I generally use iconographic elements that are decidedly universal: the sphere, the mask, or a pair of wings. My objective is to be inclusive, to the extent possible. After all, if there is in fact a common language for man across all time, I believe the questions and answers are as varied as the cultural and intellectual diversity of each one.
When one accepts that symbols are more than just forms valued in and of themselves, the possibilities for communication become infinite. I do not believe man has a sole thought. Rather, the mind operates in more than one reality, including the personal interpretation of symbols and of human existence. Artistic expression is the freedom to speak a hundred different tongues using one language.
